The Electoral Strategy team is an integral part of AFP's work, engaging in elections to build broad-based policy coalitions by recruiting and supporting candidates for office.

Partnering closely with the Executive Vice President, the Political Research Director will lead a team responsible for evaluating and researching the policy positions of potential and current political candidates for races at multiple levels of government, including gubernatorial, state legislative, congressional, and senate races. This role will collaborate with internal teams to develop vetting strategies to elect policy champions who will advance AFPs policy priorities aligned with our vision. The research team will also create products to inform other key organizational strategies.

How You Will Contribute

1. Supervise and lead the research team, connecting them to the organizations vision and developing talent.
2. Oversee the research teams work products, including opposition research, and provide recommendations to organizational leaders regarding potential candidates under consideration.
3. Develop and refine candidate vetting strategies and tools used to assess political candidates for policy alignment and reputational risk.
4. Drive collaboration across stakeholders within the Electoral Strategies team and other departments, including Government Affairs, Policy, and State Chapters.

What You Will Bring

1. 5+ years of research experience related to the political/electoral field (including local, state, or federal campaigns, political committees, Super PACs, or consulting).
2. Strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment with a high sense of urgency.
3. Proactive communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively toward greater results.
4. A strong commitment to AFP's approach to political engagement.
5. Experience supervising a team of staff is highly desirable.
