Firefighter Paramedic

Under general supervision, engages in firefighting operations, emergency medical services assigned to Firefighter Paramedic class, fire prevention, and other public safety activities; responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls to protect life, property and the environment; demonstrates a full understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; participates in station and equipment maintenance, training activities, and record keeping; and performs such other duties as may be assigned.

The Firefighter Paramedic classification is primarily responsible for responding to all calls for life support, fire suppression, fire alarms and other emergencies to protect life, property and the environment endangered by fire or other crisis. This classification is distinguished from the next lower classification of Firefighter by the performance of advanced medical and life support duties.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Performs the full array of duties assigned to the Firefighter Paramedic classification including the provision of medical aid and life support at emergency scenes, and performs fire suppression and fire prevention duties.
• Provides a full range of medical aid and life support at an emergency scene; may perform victim extrication; and interacts with hospital personnel.
• Tests and maintains medical and rescue equipment and drug inventory.
• Performs the full range of duties assigned to the Firefighter classification at a fire scene such as responding to alarms, hooking lines to hydrant, laying lines of hose, making initial attack, directing streams of water, carrying and setting up ladders, ventilating buildings, performing search and rescue, administering first aid, and mopping, sweeping, and cleaning after fires, and performing salvage and overhaul; may participate in fire investigations of cause and origin.
• Tests, washes and services fire apparatus and equipment; tests, washes and hangs hose.
• Drills with company members; attends special training sessions on fire fighting and fire prevention techniques; studies City street layout and water systems.
• Participates in company fire prevention inspections of local businesses.
• Participates in station maintenance and upkeep.
• Participates in Department public education programs regarding fire prevention.
• Prepares reports and documentation related to paramedic and fire incidents.
• Demonstrates a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties.
• Responds to questions and concerns from the general public; provides information as is appropriate and resolves complaints.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

High school graduation or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency.

Licenses and Certifications:

1. Completion of an accredited Fire Academy or equivalent OR

Two (2) years of part time Fire Service with a California State Firefighter I certification or nationally recognized basic Firefighter certification.

2. Valid Class C California Driver License and acceptable driving record.

3. Possession of, or ability to obtain upon hire, Firefighter Endorsement through the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

4. Valid Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic (EMT-P) with Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.

5. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

6. Possession of, or ability to obtain upon hire, San Bernardino County ICEMA accreditation.

7. Passed Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) or Biddle Exam. This is waived for lateral Firefighter Paramedic applicants.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of: human anatomy and physiology; pharmacology; physics; paramedic protocol; and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Complex principles, practices and procedures of modern fire fighting and rescue and the operation and general maintenance of fire fighting vehicles, equipment and apparatus.

Uses of a variety of vehicles, equipment, tools and apparatus used in fire fighting, rescue, and medical assistance operations.

Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations.

Occupational hazard and standard safety practices.

Methods and techniques for record keeping.

Proper English, spelling and grammar.

Skill to: operate and use equipment for fire fighting, rescue, and medical assistance operations.

Perform advanced life support and CPR.

Provide quality patient care.

Ability to: demonstrate physical endurance, agility, strength, and stamina in the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions.

Think and act quickly with good judgment in emergencies.

Apply applicable laws, codes and regulations.

Work a variety of shifts including weekend, holiday, and emergency callback.

Work for extended durations of time away from the City for mutual aid emergencies.

Operate an office computer and applicable software.

Understand and follow oral directions promptly and accurately.

Work independently.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Working Conditions:

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The ability to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot and cold. The incumbent may work around or in contact with hazardous materials, blood products and potentially toxic substances. Incumbent may be subject to physical threats, verbal abuse, or other stressful situations. During fire suppression activities, incumbent wears self-contained breathing apparatus and enters smoke filled buildings.
