Substance Abuse Counselor

Location: Bronx, NY

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (flexibility required for 24/7 program needs)

Job Type: Full-Time

Pay Rate: $29 per hour

Overview:

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Substance Abuse Counselor to join our team. The ideal candidate will provide essential support and services to individuals with substance use disorders, including those with co-occurring mental health conditions and histories of homelessness. This role operates within a residential setting and involves collaboration with local offices, community partners, and internal teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver person-centered counseling and support to individuals in recovery
  • Collaborate with treatment teams and external agencies
  • Maintain timely and accurate documentation
  • Participate in care planning, case conferences, and quality assurance efforts
  • Adhere to all ethical, safety, and programmatic guidelines

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or a related field with a NYS CASAC or CASAC-T certification,
  • OR
  • NYS CASAC certification with a minimum of two (2) years of experience in the substance abuse field
  • If candidate only holds a CASAC-T, a Bachelor’s Degree is required
  • Experience working with individuals who are mentally ill, have substance use disorders, or have experienced homelessness is preferred

Certifications & Licenses:

  • CASAC or CASAC-T (Required)
  • No additional licenses required

Physical Demands:

  • Light physical effort: occasional lifting, carrying, or pushing of light objects (5–10 lbs)
  • Extended time working at a computer or workstation

Working Conditions:

  • Professional office setting within a residential facility
  • Travel to local offices, events, and partner organizations as needed
  • Routine use of standard office equipment (computers, phones, copiers, etc.)

Safety Responsibilities:

  • Follow all company policies and safety procedures
  • Use personal protective equipment when required
  • Promptly report unsafe conditions, incidents, or equipment issues
  • Maintain valid certifications and follow safety-related responsibilities as assigned
  • Conduct oneself in a respectful, professional manner at all times
