Location: College Park, MD

University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) seeks adjunct faculty to teach on-site at College Park, MD, for the Social & Behavioral Sciences & Gerontology program. Specifically, we are seeking faculty for the following course(s):

Technology in Contemporary Society (BEHS 103):

An overview of critical issues in modern parenting in the United States and the world. The objective is to use an interdisciplinary perspective to apply research and theory in family development to practical decision-making, taking into account modern and historical trends such as gender roles, socioeconomic status, and single parenting and the impact of divorce on children. Discussion examines the role of race and ethnicity in parenting, LGBT parenting, and multigenerational and military families.

Introduction to Sociology (SOCY 100):

An introduction to the basic concepts, theoretical perspectives, and research methods in sociology. The objective is to apply sociological imagination, perspectives, and research to uncover patterns of social behavior and identify their consequences. Topics include culture, socialization, groups, deviance, stratification, institutions, and social change.

American Society (SOCY 300):

An in-depth examination of American society and what it means to be American from a sociological perspective. Discussion explores past and current values, ideals, and norms and applies sociological theories to analyze the ways that these values, ideals, and norms have shaped aspects of American social life, such as politics, consumerism, popular culture, social stratification, economics, diversity, education, religion, and social change. The objective is to identify and describe various aspects of social and cultural change to better understand American society.

Required Education and Experience

  • Master's in Social Science, or a related field, from an accredited institution of higher learning is required.

  • Professional experience in behavioral sciences or related field

  • Experience teaching adult learners online and in higher education is strongly preferred

  • Seeking instructors to teach specifically at College Park, MD.

The Adjunct Faculty Role at UMGC

Your role as an adjunct faculty member will be to:

  • Actively engage students through frequent interaction that motivates them to succeed, and conveys a genuine energy and enthusiasm for their learning.

  • Guide students in active collaboration and the application of their learning in problem- and project-based learning demonstrations.

  • Provide rich and regular constructive feedback, utilizing rubrics effectively for the assessment of student work, and acknowledging student accomplishments.

  • Demonstrate relevant and current subject-matter expertise, and help students connect concepts across their academic program.

  • Provide feedback to your program chair on possible curricular improvements.
