Job Description

Seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead Front-end and Mobile App development for an exciting consumer robotics start up

Skip

Dogpatch, San Francisco

ABOUT US:

Skip is on a mission to make life joyful through powered movement.

Movement is a powerful way to build physical, mental and social health. Yet it is elusive for the 2 billion people due to age, injury, or disability. We are building products that will restore mobility for millions and enable a new frontier of joyful movement experiences. We want to build a future where a grandparent can easily outrun their grandkids and no one is left behind at the trailhead.

Skip is a 12-person early-stage start-up that spun out of Google X in 2023. With deep cross-disciplinary expertise and key partnerships (e.g. with Arc’teryx) we are uniquely positioned to launch the first commercially successful wearable robotic device, the MO/GO, and transform millions of lives in the coming years.

More information about Skip and MO/GO can be found at

THE ROLE:

We are seeking a highly motivated and adaptable individual who will explore the peaks and valleys of all problems that may come up while building a new category of consumer product.

You’ll work as a fullstack SWE on our small software team, and in collaboration with our other senior SWEs, you'll be responsible for the frontend of our software stack, including guiding development of our mobile applications as we build a new consumer robotics platform. We are currently a flat team, but you’ll be expected to coach and mentor Skippers with less experience, and potentially help hire and lead additional developers over time.

Some of the specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and support cross-platform mobile applications that may extend functionality for broader use cases, including OTAs, user preference tuning, and monitoring.
  • Design, develop and improve a user-friendly internal GUI that allows engineering and R&D teams to control and fine-tune robotic prototypes , focusing on speed, usability, and accuracy.
  • Implement data collection, organization, labelling and log management features, supporting scalable processing for eventual consumer product readiness.
  • Develop tools within the GUI for visualizing and exporting data logs, enabling engineers to analyze performance, troubleshoot issues, and monitor system behavior over time. Ensure this process is stable, secure, and efficient, supporting seamless data communication for real-time and post-processing analysis.
  • Design and manage an authentication workflow, incorporating secure logins, user data management, and access controls, ensuring robust security and user management.
  • Create and maintain clean, scalable code for the GUI, ensuring responsiveness and smooth interaction.
  • Integrate with backend services, databases, and APIs to facilitate data storage, retrieval, and analysis.
  • Conduct performance testing and optimize the GUI for responsiveness, especially during real-time controls and data-heavy operations.
  • Document development processes and user workflows, maintaining clarity for future updates and scalability.
  • Wearing prototypes several hours a week to participate in data collection, test new models and provide feedback
  • Contribute to the improvement of software development processes and practices. Engage in code reviews and knowledge sharing to promote a culture of continuous learning.
  • Bring joy to the team, participate in embarrassing team events, tolerate KZ’s terrible music choices

Must Have Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience with app development on Android and iOS. Ideally most of this experience is for startups and/or consumer hardware products.
  • 3+ years experience with front-end web development languages and UI frameworks such as React
  • 2+ years experience with data handling and visualization in user interfaces, particularly for applications requiring real-time data streaming and logging.
  • Experience interfacing with IoT or bluetooth enabled hardware devices
  • Solid understanding of proxying data flows and experience in ensuring secure, stable data communication for complex systems.
  • Experience with authentication workflows, including secure login, user management, and data protection practices.
  • Familiarity with automatic testing frameworks (e.g., Jest, Cypress) and experience setting up device simulation to test system performance under various conditions.
  • Knowledge of integrating frontend applications with backend services and databases, using RESTful or GraphQL APIs.
  • Competence with Linux, python, and general debugging
  • Able to deliver quality work in a fast-paced startup environment
  • Ability to relocate to work at the Skip Bay Area office
  • Sense of humour, tolerant of Aussie & Canadian spelling

Bonus Points

  • Experience with robotics or mechatronics (ST/TI firmware, SPI/UART, BLE, etc)
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure like GCP
  • Experience in start-up environments
  • Personal motivation to improve human movement
  • Taylor Swift fan. Good taste in background music :)

This is a full time position working at the Skip office 3-4 days/week in the San Francisco Bay Area, starting ASAP.
