Senior Research Associate / Scientist – Cancer Prevention Our startup company is discovering therapies capable of preventing cancer via stopping DNA damage. The vision is to tackle healthcare through a prevention lens - solve the challenge of cancer by ensuring it never occurs in the first place. The lab is based in the Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco, and the small startup team is supported by all-star advisors knowledgeable on cancer prevention, cancer initiation, and aging. Role Description We are looking for a scientist to build and implement screens for therapies that can prevent DNA mutations. This hire will be largely independent, responsible for all aspects of the scientific work necessary to demonstrate protection from DNA damage. Culture Our company believes in two key pillars for success: focus and collaboration. We prioritize solving scientific problems as directly and pragmatically as possible in order to minimize the amount of time it will take to improve patient lives across the world. To this end, we work together in-person to brainstorm efficiently. Role Specifics Set up cell-based medium-throughput screening assays for determining genomic damage and mutational burden. This can include, but is not limited to, knowledge of microscopy, basic molecular biology, bioinformatics techniques (including DNA sequencing), flow cytometry, primary human cell culture, and cell transformation assays. Assist in determining clinical and commercial strategy for genoprotective therapies. Assist in operational aspects of setting up a lab and team. Meet with relevant experts and collaborators to accelerate discovery of mutation-preventative therapies. Necessary Qualifications Six or more years of relevant experience in DNA damage or DNA repair, with a Ph.D preferred. Experience working with cell models of DNA damage and mutations. Experience with managing larger, fast-moving projects. Experience with operational aspects of science - use of ELNs, working with vendors, organization of materials and reagents, etc. Beneficial Qualifications Previous expertise in developing assays assessing mutational burden. Previous expertise in novel assay development. Previous expertise in rare diseases that involve DNA damage, such as HGPS and Fanconi anemia. Previous expertise working with hematopoietic stem cells and/or other stem cells. Previous startup experience. Previous expertise in scaling up assays via the use of automation equipment. A deeply creative and original spirit. Passion for the longevity and cancer prevention spaces. Please send a cover letter to alan@permanence.bio.
