Job Duties Contributes to the agency's public safety mission by supervising and counseling supervisee in the community setting. Works directly with supervisee in support of the Department's reentry mission. Interviews, gathers, verifies and evaluates information to prepare pre-sentence investigations including sentencing recommendations/suggestions. Informs supervisee of conditions of supervision and develops case plans. Directly monitors supervisees' behavior. Maintains supervisee files and documents case activities. Investigates, reports, and follows up on alleged supervisee violations to determine appropriate and available sanctions. Prepares sentencing guidelines and testifies in circuit court. Probation Officers participate in Virginia Law Officers' Retirement System (VaLORS), which is a defined benefit plan with enhanced benefits for hazardous duty. VaLORS participants are eligible to retire at age 60 with five years of creditable service or as early as age 50 with 25 years of creditable service. A reduced benefit is available at age 50 with five years of creditable service.
The position is located in the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) northern pay band area and the hiring range listed includes a $4,000 pay differential associated with this District Office.
Minimum Qualifications Valid driver's license. Recent experience working directly with diverse groups of clients, co-workers and community agencies in a criminal justice and/or human services setting to accomplish collaborative and individual goals. Recent experience providing high volume case management supervision and documenting case activities on an on-going basis in a fast paced criminal justice and/or human services setting. Experience providing counseling and targeted intervention to criminal justice and/or human services clients on an ongoing basis in a fast paced, high volume setting. Experience making referrals to service/program providers and to management for review. Experience gathering information, creating and presenting reports to criminal justice &/or judiciary entities, administrative officials, courts or the Parole Board. Demonstrated skill in the use of Microsoft Office to include Outlook, Word, and Excel. The selected candidate must be eligible and have the ability to obtain required VCIN certification.
Additional Considerations Experience making field &/or home visits to clients. Experience keying data into a case management or automated record system such as Virginia Corrections Information System (VACORIS) program, Badge, etc. Experience in completing risk assessments and developing case plans. Awareness of Evidence Based Practices (EBP). Bi-lingual and Multi-lingual applicants are encouraged to apply.
