Generator technicians are specialized mechanics who install, service, and maintain generator systems and related equipment. They work on generators that are often powered by heavy diesel or gas-fueled combustion engines and are used to provide electrical power. Their responsibilities may include:

• Diagnosing and repairing: Troubleshooting and repairing electrical and mechanical failures in generators, transfer switches, and other equipment
• Performing maintenance: Performing routine preventative maintenance, oil and filter changes, and inspections
• Estimating costs: Making cost and material estimates for repairs and replacement supplies
• Maintaining records: Collecting data for preventive maintenance systems, maintaining activity logs, and completing work orders and reports
• Ensuring efficiency: Testing and monitoring the engines' combustion systems to ensure efficient energy output
• Handling hazardous materials: Transporting or disposing of hazardous and flammable materials

Some skills and traits that may be useful for generator technicians include:

Generator technicians may also need to be able to work overtime with little notice, including occasional weekend hours. They may also be subject to physical, drug and alcohol testing, and background check requirements.
