COA VAN DRIVER TEMPORARY (DECEMBER 15 - MAY 15)
VAN DRIVER
Hourly Rate: $21.19 per hour
Monday and Thursday (14 hours per week)
Definition
Responsible for transporting elderly and disabled citizens to and from appointed destinations; all other related work, as required.
Supervision
Works under the general supervision of the Transportation Coordinator.
Performs routine work of a repetitive nature which involves the exercise of considerable caution and safety when driving passengers to and from various locations. Works independently and exercises judgment involving transportation issues.
Work Environment
Work is performed on the road, with exposure to all weather conditions, hazards and conditions associated with driving.
The employee operates standard office equipment and a lift-equipped passenger van.
Performance of duties requires constant contact with passengers.
Errors could result in considerable delay or loss of service, personal injury, injury to others, damage to equipment, and legal repercussions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Transports elderly and disabled citizens to and from various destinations, such as, medical offices, hospitals, special events and meal sites; assists passengers entering and exiting the van; provides physical assistance, as necessary.
Monitors condition of van including tires, gas, oil, and body; reports problems or deficiencies to supervisor; maintains cleanliness of vehicles at all times.
Maintains daily logs and related records.
Performs similar or related work, as required, or as situation dictates.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
High school graduation, or equivalent, and one year of experience driving in comparable weather conditions; experience working with elderly persons desirable; experience operating manual/automatic lift and communications equipment; or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
Additional Requirements
Valid Class D Massachusetts motor vehicle operator's license.
Certification in CPR and First Aid.
MARTAP Certifications (Training provided through the Council on Aging).
Knowledge, Ability, and Skill
General knowledge of the town street system and community facilities. Knowledge of operation of a passenger van with lift.
Ability to interact with elderly and disabled persons in a positive and sensitive manner.
Ability to understand and follow oral instructions and read forms and maps.
Ability to function well in stressful or emergency situations.
Ability to work independently.
Must have a good driving record and skill in driving a van in all types of weather conditions.
Physical Requirements
Moderate physical effort required when driving for long periods of time; intermittent strenuous physical effort is required to operate wheelchair lift and physically assist passengers, occasionally lifting more than 100 pounds. The employee is regularly required to use hands to operate equipment and reach with hands and arms and operate, steer, and maneuver a commercial vehicle under various weather conditions.
