Reporting to the Planner & Community Development Director, this role is responsible for conducting building inspections, issuing permits, enforcing State and Municipal building and zoning codes and ordinances, inspecting general projects to verify conformance with safety laws and ordinances, and other related work. Representative job duties include:

  • Review plans and/or specifications for new buildings, additions and alterations to existing structures both residential and commercial to ensure compliance with all applicable codes and ordinances as well as site plans and surveys for compliance with municipal building and zoning codes.
  • Assist residents, builders, and developers through the City’s permitting process including requirements for permit submittals, fees, and all processes that support the public in obtaining permits and other requested documentation. Issue building permits upon plan review completion with assistance from administrative staff.
  • Inspect buildings during construction to ensure plan and code conformity.
  • Inspect construction, HVAC, plumbing, erosion control and electrical installations for code compliance on 1 & 2 Family buildings. If commercially certified, inspect construction and HVAC for commercial buildings.
  • Maintain inspection records and permits issued.
  • Inspect and respond to citizen complaints concerning alleged building and zoning code violations, debris accumulations and other property maintenance issues, and interpret and enforce any ordinances governing such complaints.
  • Draft enforcement letters and other Department correspondence as necessary. Prepare reports for use by administrative or judicial authorities.
  • Conduct final zoning occupancy inspections to ensure compliance with approved architecture, landscaping, parking, lighting, and other conditions of approval.
  • Provide excellent customer service and positive public relations by being polite, courteous, and professional and in-person, over the phone or via email with the general public, co-workers, Alderpersons, the Mayor, and other staff members of the City of Pewaukee.

Required certifications include construction, HVAC, plumbing, erosion control and electrical for code compliance on 1 & 2 Family buildings; commercial building and commercial plumbing preferred.
