Summary/Objective The Assistant City Attorney I provides progressively more responsible civil and/or criminal legal services for the municipality. The Assistant City Attorney I may be assigned to focus on specific areas of law or municipal operations, as needed. The Assistant City Attorney I requires only occasional instruction or assistance as new, unusual or unique situations arise, but is fully aware of the operating procedures and policies to perform the essential functions of the position.
Essential Functions Reviews and drafts legal documents - Prepares and reviews legal and other documents, including ordinances, resolutions, memos, pleadings, reports, recommendations, administrative and personnel policies, forms, permits, letters, press releases, informational documents, and other communications.
Writes and amends ordinances - Researches, interprets, and applies City ordinances, resolutions and applicable state and federal laws.
- Attends meetings with City staff to answer legal questions, applies legal points and procedures and recommends changes to meet legal requirements.
- Trains and advises City code officers on enforcement matters and reviews and prosecutes violations of the City Code related to adopted building codes, zoning, nuisances, utilities and similar City issues.
Conducts legal research and provides legal opinions - Performs legal research, provides legal opinions and prepares documents on a range of routine legal issues impacting the municipality.
Performs additional support duties as required - Backs up City Prosecutors & City Code/Zoning Enforcement.
Requirements
Required Education and Experience - Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Juris doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
- License to practice law and memberships in good standing of the bar of the State of Kansas and the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas.
- One (1) year of experience.
Preferred Education and Experience - Three (3) years of professional legal experience.
Compensation & Benefits - Automobile & Cell Phone Allowance
- Retirement/Pension - City employees are required by statute to contribute to the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System (KPERS). Voluntary retirement contributions are offered with Nationwide, Mission Square, and Empower KPERS 457.
